I’m a guy with medium length, curly but not quite nappy, hair. I found Afritude from a google search and went to get my hair braided. The stylist is casual, which I like, but organized like a professional. She always started on time but I must admit it takes her longer to braid my hair than everyone else who I have had do it. Her shop is poor: it is clean, but dated, and the waiting area is unfortunate. In her defence, I have not spent much time in the waiting area, so perhaps this is why she doesn’t amend it. The shampoo station feels much like a restroom. The entire salon has the overall feel of an older home, rather than a business.
I stopped going there because of a comment she made concerning scalp braiding men’s hair. She suggested that it was not lucrative enough for her time and that it was really hard on her hands. After the second consecutive time she mentioned this while braiding my hair, I assumed that she would prefer not to have my business and I have since taken it elsewhere. Her prices were consistent with other places I have had my hair styled. Unfortunately I was unclear as to whether her prices included a washing because she charged me the same whether I needed her to wash it or not.
I can recommend her as a stylist, as she appears to be talented from her other customers’ results, and as long as you are making a significant purchase, I’m sure you won’t get any complaints. Men, however, would be better served by another beautician.
